Terms of use

Effective 27 August 2026

These terms govern your use of Bread Jar at breadjar.app. By creating an account you agree to them. If you do not, please do not use the service.

What Bread Jar is

A budgeting tool. You record your income and spending, and it does arithmetic on the numbers you give it — envelope balances, rollover, goal funding and a cash-flow projection.

Bread Jar is not a bank, a financial adviser, an accountant or a tax service, and nothing in it is financial advice. It has no connection to any financial institution, moves no money, and cannot see your real balances. Its figures are only as accurate as what you enter. Decisions you make with them are your own, and for anything consequential you should talk to a qualified professional.

Your account

  • You need a Google account to sign in, and you must be old enough to form a binding contract where you live — and at least 13 in any case.
  • Keep your Google account secure. Anything done through a session opened with your credentials is treated as done by you.
  • Give accurate information, and keep your email address current.
  • You may not share one account between people. Use a household instead.

Households

A household is a shared budget with shared visibility. Inviting someone gives them access to all of its financial history, and admins can invite and remove others. Invite deliberately.

Owners and admins are responsible for who has access to their household. If someone should no longer see it, remove them — we cannot know that for you.

Recording expenses by email

A household may enable recording expenses by email. If it does, a message that passes sender authentication and comes from a member’s address can create a transaction. We check that the sending domain authorises the message and that the address belongs to exactly one household, and every message is logged whether accepted or refused.

Even so, this means anyone who controls a member’s email account can add entries to your budget. Entries created this way are marked uncleared for you to review. If you are not comfortable with that, do not publicise the address or enable the feature.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Break the law, or use Bread Jar to help someone else break it.
  • Try to reach data belonging to a household you are not a member of, or probe, scan or interfere with the service’s security.
  • Overload the service, scrape it, or automate access in a way that degrades it for others.
  • Upload malware, or anything unlawful or abusive.
  • Resell or rebrand the service without our written permission.

We may suspend or close accounts that do these things, generally with notice, and immediately where there is a risk to others.

Your data

What you put into Bread Jar is yours. You grant us only the permission needed to run the service for you — to store it, display it back to you and your household, and process it to make the features work. We claim no ownership of it and will not use it to train anything or sell it.

How we handle it is set out in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.

Availability

We aim to keep Bread Jar running, but it is provided without any guarantee of uptime. We may change, suspend or discontinue features. If we ever shut the service down, we will give reasonable notice and a way to get your data out.

Keep your own records. Do not rely on Bread Jar as the only copy of anything that matters to you.

Disclaimer and liability

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that its calculations will suit your circumstances.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, nor for lost profits, lost savings, lost data or financial losses arising from your use of Bread Jar. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or fifty US dollars.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this may not apply to you. Nothing here limits liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence, where the law forbids that.

Ending it

You may stop using Bread Jar and delete your data at any time. We may terminate or suspend access if you breach these terms, or if we discontinue the service. The sections on your data, disclaimers, liability and governing law survive termination.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change materially affects your rights we will give notice in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Bread Jar after that means you accept the new terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts located there will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute — except that nothing deprives a consumer of the protection of mandatory laws in their own country of residence.
